Richmond Dragway IHRA Summit Pro Am and Champion Systems Sportsman National Wrapup

pitsRichmond Dragway hosted the largest IHRA Pro Am and Sportsman National weekend of the 2009 Racing Season and had a great weekend of racing action.  Drivers and cars rolled into Sandston, VA from all up and down the East Coast.  From as far North as Nova Scotia, Canada and as far South as Fort Lauderdale, FL. 

Over the course of the weekend, over 630 competitors took to the historic on-trackRichmond Dragway racing surface.  At the end of the event, there were seven new IHRA Pro Am Tour winners including: 

Super Rod — Dale Koncen, Corvette, 6.343, 126.55  def. Lenard Marshall, Corvette, 6.462,
120.42.
Stock — Monty Cornwell, Nova, 7.069, 94.50  def. Anthony Bertozzi, Camaro, 6.717, 97.53.
Top Dragster — Ray Weinstein, Dragster, 4.917, 140.06  def. Chris Cepelka, Dragster, 4.836,
133.37.
Quick Rod — Bo Upton, Dragster, 7.865, 63.81  def. Chip Johnson, Dragster, foul.
Top Sportsman — Mike Koontz, S-10, 4.748, 142.72  def. Stephanie Raynor, Grand Am, 5.058,
135.62.
Super Stock — Bob Phillips, Lebaron, 6.727, 100.76  def. Bryan Worner, Camaro, foul.
Hot Rod — Chris Carpenter, Vega, 6.984, 105.63  def. Chris Dean, Camaro, foul.

tdlanesAfter Sunday’s Champion System Sportsman National, 7 more drivers visited the RD Victory Lane but these seven also punched their tickets to participate in the IHRA’s Tournament Of Champions World Championship Runoff at Rockingham in the Fall.  Results are:

TOP DRAGSTER
Dylan Stott, Columbus, N.C., dragster, 4.660, 147.69  def. Chad Traylor, King William, Va., dragster, 4.687, 147.01.

TOP SPORTSMAN
Mike Koontz, Warrenton, Va., ’00 S-10, 4.767, 147.06  def. Mike Alexander Sr., Mechanicsville, Va., ’63 Corvette, 4.908, 141.33.

QUICK ROD
Tony Helms, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., dragster, 5.699, 136.40  def. John Dustin, Rockville, Md., dragster, 5.713, 131.04.

SUPER ROD
Shannon Waycaster, Kings Mountain, N.C., ’03 Corvette, 6.407, 120.45  def. Donald Webb, Four Oaks, N.C., ’69 Camaro, 6.396, 115.59.

HOT ROD
Jeff Heilmeier, Waldorf, Md., ’68 Firebird, 7.001, 103.26  def. Michelle Furr, Galax, Va., ’68 Camaro, 7.006, 101.51.

STOCK
Adam Keir,’70 Nova, A/SA, 6.529, 97.17  def. Gene Jordan, Reidsville, N.C., ’69 Camaro, T/STK, 6.758, 101.10.

SUPER STOCK
Bob Cupp, Alexandria, Va., ’65 Chevelle, SS/KA, 9.117, 80.37  def. Richard Preaser, Jackson, N.J., ’86 Mustang, SS/AM, foul.

On Saturday Night, Todd Welzel took the American Racecars Run for the Dragster Race win and got a brand new American Racecars Dragster for the top spot.  Steve Witherow took the victory in the High Roller gamblers race!

Richmond Dragway is already preparing for the 2010 invasion of the IHRA’s Sportsman Touring Series and looks forward to everyone’s return trip to our facility!
