Richmond Dragway caps off winning season with a great celebration at AED Champion’s Banquet

Following a season where Team RD captured a second straight Mid Atlantic Challenge Championship, a 3rd place finish at the IHRA Summit Team Finals and saw competitors excel in both events (Chris Moren won the IHRA Summit Team Finals, Rocky Pintavalle won and Roger Bridges Runner Upped at the MAC in Modified, and Roger Thornton won and Shianne Hayes runner upped at the MAC in JD).  Team Richmond got to celebrate all of those accomplishments and more with the AED Performance Champions Banquet on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the ACCA Temple in Richmond.

Taking home Championship honors in the AED Performance ET Points series were champions Bruce Sisk (Top ET), Chris Moren (Modified ET) and Rachael Whitney (Junior Dragster).  Sisk captured his 7th Richmond Dragway Championship by winning the final AED Performance ET Points Race and taking the crown by a narrow 3 point margin.  Moren, on the other hand, dominated the Modified ET Class capturing his title in early September and closing the season with a 49 point advantage.  Rachael Whitney went back – to – back to win her second consecutive championship in the Junior Dragster Class.

Top ten finishers in Top ET included Ray Loan (2nd), Tracy Taylor (2nd), Tim Green (4th), Kenny Young (5th), Cox and Traylor Racing (6th), Walton Racing (7th), Ray Weinstein (8th), Danny Spence (9th) and Robert Warren (9th).

The Modified ET top ten were Rocky Pintavalle (2nd), Skip Morgan (3rd), Roger Bridges (4th), JT Taylor (5th), Larry Miller (6th), Robert Jones (6th), Sparkman Racing (8th), Tanner & Dillard Racing (8th), Jimmy Smith (8th) and Jones & King Racing (8th).  Other award winners from the Modified ET Class included Chris Moren, Driver of the Year; Scott Hooks, Rookie of the Year; and David Tanner, Most Improved Driver.

Junior Dragster competitors in the Top Ten included Roger Thornton (2nd), Michael George Jr (3rd), Wilson and Crews Racing (4th), Brianna Lukhard (5th), Rachael Weis (6th), Shianne Hayes (7th), Ken Dabney Jr. (8th), Kennedy Weis (9th) and Adam Sparkman (10th).  Mike Whitney was awarded the Wrench of the Year for his efforts crewing Rachael to her 2nd championship.   Whitney also received her award of a Junior Dragster Makeover courtesy of Lukhard’s Paint and Body Works and Michael’s Signs for her championship.

Long time race official and former driver, Nita Barber was awarded the Louis Edmonds Sportsman of the Year Award for her dedication to racing and the RD Family.  Barber overcame a battle with Breast Cancer in 2012 and continued to work as the track announcer all season long.  For his efforts promoting the track and assisting with many improvements around the facility, Tim Thornton was awarded the Man of the Year award.

Held during the night, Richmond Dragway hosts a “Practice Tree” event for the top 8 drivers in each class with special awards for the winners.  The winner of the Beal Racing Engines Dyno Challenge was Tracy Taylor, earning a full day session on the Dyno at Thomasville, NC’s Beal Racing Engines.  Winning the Collision-One.com Helmet Makeover for the Junior Dragsters was Brianna Lukhard, who earned a custom paintjob on her helmet designed and applied by the talented crew at Collision One Paint and Autobody in Mechanicsville, VA .

Ray’s Swimming Pool and Supply owner, Ray Weinstein shared nearly $1000 with the 1st and 2nd place finishers through the unique Ray’s Swimming Pool Bubbly Bonus Raffle that was conducted during the 2012 season.    A highlight of the night was the great “Ultimate Doorprize” Contest annually conducted.  This year’s version pitted against Barbara Atkinson versus Mary Davis in a game called “Walrus” off of the TV show Minute to Win It.  Mary Davis won a Toshiba TV just in time for the Super bowl when she dominated the contest.

Track owner Johnny Davis capped off the night’s festivities by highlighting the 2013 season including some minor format changes to the AED Performance ET Points Season, the addition of a 3rd Collision-One.com $10 Grand Slam event, the return of the IHRA Summit Pro Am Tour and many other exciting events.  “Tonight was a wonderful tribute to the outstanding people who make Richmond Dragway a fun, competitive and wonderful place to enjoy this sport.  I am so proud to call each competitor and his or her family and crew part of our extended family at RD and look forward to an awesome 2013 Racing Season” commented Davis.
