The weather’s perfect for this Friday Night’s SPRING SHOWDOWN featuring open test and tune, FEATURED MATCH RACES, 5.00 Heads Up Doorslammers PLUS Ladies in free until 8 pm, tailgating and a car show area on the Spectator side. This is one of the biggest events of the year so don’t miss it!

Gates open at 4 pm, racing from 5-10 pm, Heads Up 5.00 qualifying #1 at 5:30 pm and q2 at 6:15 pm with first round at 7 pm. Final round of Heads up 5.00 and the Feature Match Races at 9:45 pm. Tech line closes at 9 pm and staging lanes close at 9:30 pm.

Tailgaters and Car Show participants will use the spectator side of the race track for entrance and parking but will be allowed to walk around to the pit side for no extra charge! General admission is $15 per person, ladies in FREE until 8 pm, kids 12 and under are FREE and car and driver fee for Test and Tune is $25. Test and tune is 1/8 and 1/4 mile.

Richmond Dragway will be closed Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20.

Kids 12 and under are FREE. Parking is always FREE at RD too!

Local drivers rock the IHRA Summit Pro Am Tour Weekend!

Richmond Dragway hosted a great field of drivers stretching from Ontario, Canada to Florida for the first IHRA Summit Pro Am Event of the Division 1 Season on May 4-6. Despite uncooperative weather, the event was run to completion on Sunday afternoon with two races in one day, quite an undertaking for the IHRA and RD Staff but pulled off without a hitch.

Richmond Dragway victory lane was graced by a number of local drivers who turned in outstanding performances including Alfred Burkett (Sandston) who won the Sunday event and Tournament of Champions Qualifier over runner up Calvin Butler (WV) in Grayson Murphy’s (Glen Allen) Corvette. Butler also won the Saturday event putting himself in both of the Top Sportsman Finals for the weekend.

Anthony Bertozzi (Ashland), the most prolific driver in IHRA history, lost early at an event in Atlanta and rolled into Richmond overnight to participate in Sunday’s action where he won Saturday’s Top Dragster event over Wesley Washington (King George). In the Sunday Top Dragster event, Bruce Sisk (Henrico) finished as runner up losing to Brett Nesbitt (NC) in the finals. Brett also got to the final round in Quick Rod for Sunday having a very busy afternoon.

Dickie Allen (New Kent) had a great outing in Super Rod finishing as the Saturday event runner up to Canada’s Charlie Kenopic. In the Junior Dragster division, Ashland’s Jonathan Edwards kept the IHRA Iron Man Trophy at home when he took out New Jersey’s Kendal Little.

“It was very rewarding to see the RD Staff perform tremendously under the pressure of this huge event but also as exciting was watching our local drivers excel during this event”, commented Johnny Davis, Track Operator. “I couldn’t be more proud of the great runs that these drivers put in to keep the IHRA Pro Am glory at home and the outstanding efforts of our Staff and Team! What an awesome weekend!”

Don Rudd’s father, Earsell Rudd passes

RUDD, Earsell B. “E.B.,” 87, of Richmond, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, April 2, 2012. He is survived by his two sons and their spouses, Donald and Lisa Rudd and Earl and Rosa Rudd; three grandchildren, Brandon, Christian and Dana Rudd; and several nieces and nephews. E.B. was a retired employee of Henrico County and was an avid gardner all his life. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m.Wednesday, at Bliley’s-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

RD Neighbor needs help fighting eye disease

My name is Kimberly Hart and I am writing to you about my husband, Douglas Hart. He is suffering from a debilitating disease called Ocular Histoplasmosis, which he contracted February 4^ththis year. This is a serious disease and a leading cause of blindness. At present, he has lost sight in his left eye and has multiple lesions present on his right eye. He is getting injections of Avastin into his eyes to treat it. He is waiting to see if he is a candidate for surgery.

Doug’s job only has long term disability benefits, which will not kick in for a few months. We need to get individual health insurance but this is a huge problem since his retinal specialist ordered him to cease working for his own safety. Since Doug is now without pay, we are low on funds and high in debt with medical bills since treatment is costly. He will have to be covered for the upcoming procedures needed to possibly save his eyesight in his right eye.

Doug is only 29 years old and has three children to support. He is a devoted father, son and husband. His biggest fear is of losing his sight completely and not being able to work to support his family. But even through this tragedy, he always keeps a bright smile on his face and shows us so much love, even though I know he hurts deep inside. I am only working part-time to put food on the table, and our growing children need a lot of emotional and financial support to keep up with their active lifestyles. Our youngest son, Jacob, is 5 and about to start kindergarten. We also have a teenage son, Dominic, who just entered high school and now plays football and a daughter, Savanna, who is competing nationally in Taekwondo. The expenses for raising children are already high, and keeping them active and happy are even more expensive, but I believe it is important to keep their spirits high as they go through this terrible situation.

What is so tragic is that Doug and I not only have to worry about healing him from the disease, but also stress over how we are going to pay for skyrocketing medical costs. It brings tears to my eyes when I hear from Doug that all he wants to do is see our daughter compete at the American Taekwondo Association World Championship this Spring if that’s the last thing he’ll see. Doug is Savanna’s number one fan and it would be heartbreaking if he could no longer see her. Even with this imminent in his mind, he still remains upbeat and supportive, as he has a pure heart and loving soul.

What is Ocular Histoplasmosis and how could this happen? Histoplasmosis is a disease caused by a fungus found in soil where bird and bat droppings have accumulated, such as in chicken coops, caves and old buildings. Doug, who is an industrial plumber, frequently works in older buildings where he might have gotten exposed to the fungus. Fungal spores can become airborne if the soil is disturbed and then be inhaled into the lungs causing flu-like, cold symptoms. Even though the symptoms are mild, it can cause a serious retinal condition called Ocular Histoplasmosis Syndrome (OHS). OHS is a leading cause of blindness in the 20 to 40 year old age group and affects men and women equally. More people need to be aware of this disease in the U.S., especially those who have high-risk professions such as farmers, construction workers and landscapers. Blindness can happen quite suddenly since the symptoms seem like the common cold. Doug woke up one day with one blind eye, and it was incredibly scary.
